Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhutan on Tuesday for a two-day visit, coinciding with the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan. He was received at Paro Airport by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who warmly welcomed him and described Modi as his “elder brother” in a post on X.

Soon after landing, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the reception, posting on X: “Landed in Bhutan. Grateful to Prime Minister Tobgay for the warm and gracious welcome at the airport. This visit reflects the deep bonds of friendship and cooperation shared between our two nations. India and Bhutan enjoy a time-tested partnership anchored in trust, goodwill and mutual respect. I look forward to further strengthening our close ties during this visit.”

The visit highlights the longstanding friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan , a relationship rooted in mutual trust, understanding, and shared history. The India-Bhutan Friendship Treaty of 1949, revised in 2007, has been the cornerstone of their partnership, encompassing cooperation in defence, trade, education, and foreign policy.

During his stay, PM Modi will participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival , where the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India are being exhibited. The exposition underscores the two nations’ shared spiritual and civilisational heritage , reflecting centuries-old cultural and religious ties.

A key feature of the visit is the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project , which marks another major milestone in India-Bhutan energy cooperation. The project highlights India’s continued support for Bhutan’s economic growth and sustainable development, reinforcing the practical side of bilateral relations.

PM Modi will also meet His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the current King of Bhutan; His Majesty the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, whose 70th birthday is being celebrated; and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The visit reflects India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, reaffirming Bhutan’s role as a key strategic partner in the region.
