PM Modi and Mauritius PM strengthen ‘Family-Like’ ties in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam held bilateral talks in Varanasi on Thursday, reaffirming the deep-rooted bond between the two nations. At a joint press briefing, PM Modi emphasized, “India and Mauritius are two nations, but our dreams and destiny are one.”

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across key sectors including health, education, energy, science and technology, infrastructure, digital public goods, renewable energy, and the blue economy. Modi also stressed India’s commitment to strengthening Mauritius’ maritime security, highlighting that a “free, open, and prosperous Indian Ocean” is in the shared interest of both countries. Additionally, the two leaders agreed to take steps toward conducting trade in local currencies to reduce dependency on the dollar.

PM Ramgoolam, who arrived in Varanasi on Wednesday, was welcomed with a ceremonial Guard of Honour and is scheduled to attend the Ganga Aarti and visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple during his stay. The visit builds on the momentum of PM Modi’s March 2025 state visit to Mauritius, during which the bilateral relationship was elevated to an “enhanced strategic partnership.”

Meanwhile, political tensions flared as the Uttar Pradesh Congress unit announced plans to protest Modi’s visit. The move comes in response to allegations that a BJP minister attempted to obstruct Rahul Gandhi’s cavalcade during his recent trip to Rae Bareli. Congress leaders asserted they would not step back from their slogan, “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chor,” vowing to demonstrate in Varanasi despite police restrictions.
