Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday emphasized the enduring relevance of the teachings of Lord Mahavira, describing them as a source of profound inspiration rooted in truth, harmony, good conduct, and equality.

Extending greetings on the occasion of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, the Prime Minister said that Mahavira’s ideals continue to illuminate the path of truth, non-violence, and compassion. He noted that these principles remain deeply relevant in today’s world and serve as a reminder of society’s shared responsibility towards equality and kindness.

In a message shared on social media, Mr. Modi stated that Mahavira’s thoughts would “forever remain the guiding path for humanity.” He also shared a Sanskrit verse encapsulating the essence of righteous conduct—urging individuals to understand dharma and refrain from treating others in ways they themselves would find harmful, thereby promoting empathy and ethical behaviour.

The teachings of Lord Mahavira, rooted in principles of non-violence, truth, equality, and self-discipline, continue to hold profound relevance in addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century. As the world grapples with rising conflict, environmental crises, and social inequalities, his philosophy offers a framework for ethical and sustainable living.

At the core of Mahavira’s message is ahimsa (non-violence), which extends beyond physical harm to include thoughts and speech. In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and societal polarization, this principle encourages dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. Closely linked is satya (truth), which underscores the importance of honesty and integrity values critical in combating misinformation and restoring trust in public institutions.

Mahavira’s emphasis on aparigraha (non-possessiveness) presents a compelling response to consumerism and environmental degradation. By advocating minimalism and mindful consumption, his teachings align with global calls for sustainability and climate responsibility. Similarly, anekantavada (the acceptance of multiple perspectives) promotes intellectual humility and openness, offering a remedy to ideological rigidity and social divisions.

His focus on equality and compassion reinforces the need for inclusive growth and social justice, urging individuals and communities to act with empathy and shared responsibility. In a rapidly evolving world, these principles provide not only spiritual guidance but also practical solutions for building a more harmonious and resilient society.

As communities across the country observe Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, the enduring wisdom of Lord Mahavira stands as a reminder that ancient philosophies continue to offer meaningful direction in navigating contemporary global challenges.
