Planning a Red Fort Visit? Monument Closed Till August 15 for Independence Day Preparations
Visitors planning a trip to Delhi's historic Red Fort will have to postpone their plans, as the iconic monument has been closed to the public from July 15 until August 15 to facilitate preparations for the country's 80th Independence Day celebrations .
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has issued an official order restricting public entry to the UNESCO World Heritage Site during this period. The temporary closure allows authorities to complete extensive arrangements, security installations and event preparations before the national celebrations on August 15.
According to the order issued under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959 , the Red Fort will remain inaccessible to tourists and general visitors until the Independence Day programme concludes.
An ASI official said such restrictions are implemented every year ahead of Independence Day to ensure smooth preparations and maintain security at one of the country's most significant ceremonial venues.
The Red Fort has held a special place in India's history ever since August 15, 1947 , when the nation celebrated its first Independence Day after the end of British colonial rule. Since then, it has served as the venue from where the Prime Minister addresses the nation every Independence Day after hoisting the National Flag from its historic ramparts.
As the annual celebrations approach, multiple government agencies begin weeks of coordinated preparations, including the installation of infrastructure, rehearsals, crowd management systems and enhanced security measures across the complex.
On August 15 , entry to the Red Fort is permitted only to government-authorised pass holders , with security remaining exceptionally tight throughout the event.
Tourists visiting Delhi over the next month are advised to adjust their sightseeing plans accordingly, as public access to one of the capital's most visited landmarks will resume only after the Independence Day celebrations conclude.
