Piyush Goyal’s Israel visit sets new milestones for India - Israel trade and technology ties

Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s recent visit to Israel marked a significant advancement in bilateral relations between the two nations, focusing on trade, technology, agriculture, and innovation. The visit included high-level meetings with Israeli ministers and business leaders, reflecting a shared resolve to expand cooperation in strategic sectors. Discussions with Israel’s Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Avi Dichter, highlighted opportunities for India to adopt Israel’s proven models in food security, seed development, and water recycling technologies crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability back home.

During his visit to the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, Goyal witnessed some of Israel’s most cutting-edge inventions, such as drip irrigation systems, stent technologies, the Iron Dome air defense system, and virtual reality solutions. These innovations underscore Israel’s reputation as a “startup nation,” and Goyal’s interaction aimed at exploring avenues for deep-tech collaboration with India. The minister also gained insights into Israel’s progress in self-driving mobility technologies and sustainable agriculture through field visits, including to Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, where he observed community-based cooperative models in action.

Goyal led a delegation of top Indian industry bodies and participated in the India-Israel Business Forum and CEO Summit, engaging with counterparts in sectors such as technology, defense, advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and agritech. These interactions identified new areas for investment, technology transfer, and joint ventures, directly addressing the evolving needs of both economies. The diamond sector, historically a cornerstone of India-Israel trade, was further reinforced during meetings with Indian diamond merchants in Israel, while new areas such as fintech, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, medtech, climate technology, and smart mobility were identified for future cooperation.

A landmark achievement of the visit was the official launch of negotiations for a comprehensive India–Israel Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with both nations signing a Terms of Reference to facilitate smoother customs procedures, enhance technology transfer, and promote skilled professional exchanges. This future FTA is poised to create fresh pathways for business collaboration, particularly between the startup ecosystems of both countries, where a proposed “startup bridge” could accelerate joint ventures and innovation exchanges.

Strategically, this visit showcased India and Israel’s commitment to deepening partnerships in sectors critical to global challenges cybersecurity, clean energy, urban mobility, climate action, medtech, space, and digital transformation. These initiatives directly align with India’s ambitions to become a global leader in innovation, leveraging Israel’s R&D expertise and pioneering solutions. The trip also included engagement with the Indian business community and diaspora in Israel, reinforcing cultural and people-to-people bonds that further cement bilateral ties.
