A statue of Jyotirao Phule was vandalised on February 6 at Tellapur village in Sangareddy district , Telangana , triggering protests and sharp political reactions. Police said the statue had been installed only days earlier, and tensions rose after unidentified persons allegedly damaged it in public view. Authorities moved quickly to control the situation, and around 20 people were arrested under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act , while investigations into the motive are ongoing. Officials clarified that those detained were not linked to any specific political party.

Maharashtra Minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal strongly condemned the act, calling it an attack on the ideals of social equality and social justice that Phule stood for. In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah , he sought immediate intervention and demanded strict legal action against those responsible. Although the incident occurred in Telangana, Bhujbal’s involvement is linked to Phule’s deep historical connection to Maharashtra and his own political identity rooted in the causes of backward class rights and reformist social movements inspired by Phule’s legacy. Leaders noted that Phule is regarded as a national social reform icon , and incidents involving his legacy often draw responses beyond regional boundaries.

Phule, a 19th-century reformer, is widely respected for his pioneering work in women’s education , caste reform , and the upliftment of backward communities . His legacy represents educational empowerment and progressive thought, making such incidents particularly sensitive in India’s public sphere. Political leaders emphasized that protecting the dignity of historical reformers is essential to preserving harmony and upholding democratic values.
