Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹24 lakh after his team maintained a slow over rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.

The penalty was imposed under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct , which deals with minimum over rate offences during matches. According to the IPL media advisory , this incident marked Punjab Kings’ second over rate violation of the season , resulting in a stricter punishment for the skipper.

Despite the disciplinary action, the match itself turned out to be a positive outing for Punjab Kings. The team, runners up in the previous season, secured their second consecutive win by defeating five time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in a competitive encounter.

However, the slow pace of bowling overs during the match attracted the attention of the league authorities. Since it was PBKS’s second offence this season , the fine imposed on captain Shreyas Iyer was increased to ₹24 lakh , in accordance with the tournament’s regulations.

The penalties were not limited to the captain alone. As per the IPL rules, the rest of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will also face fines . Each member of the playing squad has been penalised either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lower .

The IPL has strict guidelines on maintaining the minimum over rate to ensure matches proceed smoothly and within scheduled time limits. Repeated violations can lead to heavier fines and further disciplinary action in the tournament.

While Punjab Kings celebrated another important victory on the field, the slow over rate breach served as a reminder that discipline and time management remain crucial in the high pressure environment of the IPL.
