Partially Cooked Hostel Meal Sickens Over 70 Students in Andhra Tribal School
A suspected food poisoning incident caused panic at a government tribal boys’ ashram school in Devarapalli village under Maredumilli mandal on Saturday, after students reportedly ate partially cooked idlis and sambar , with over 70 students falling ill soon after the hostel meal. The affected children developed vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and headaches within a short time of eating. As symptoms intensified, school staff alerted authorities and arranged emergency medical transport.
The students were shifted to Rampachodavaram Area Hospital and nearby primary health centres, where doctors provided emergency treatment , including fluids and observation. A few students were admitted to the ICU for monitoring , though officials later stated that most children were out of danger . Parents were informed promptly, and local representatives visited the hospital to reassure families.
District authorities have launched a comprehensive inquiry , and food and water samples have been sent for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause. Officials said strict action would be taken if negligence in food preparation or hygiene is confirmed.
The Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) Project Officer and local MLA reviewed treatment arrangements at the hospital and directed staff to ensure adequate medicines and care . State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav also spoke with district officials, sought updates on the students’ condition, and instructed authorities to focus on food quality and hygiene standards in tribal ashram schools to prevent similar incidents in the future.
