Parliament's Biggest Political Battle Yet? Delimitation, CJP Protest and Ram Temple Row Collide

The Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning on July 20 is expected to witness intense confrontations as the government prepares to push several important legislations while the opposition gears up to corner the Centre over a series of political controversies.

The session opens amid heightened political tension, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) planning a march to Parliament after activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital following the police intervention that ended his 21-day hunger strike . The opposition has also sharpened its attack over the alleged Ram Temple donation embezzlement case, making both issues central to its strategy.

One of the biggest political flashpoints is expected to be the government's attempt to reintroduce the Constitution Amendment Bill on delimitation and women's reservation , despite its defeat in the previous session. The proposed legislation seeks to reserve 33 per cent of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies by the 2029 general elections , alongside a fresh delimitation exercise and an increase in the strength of the Lok Sabha.

Although the bill is yet to be formally included in the legislative agenda, the BJP-led NDA is actively working to secure the required two-thirds majority needed for a constitutional amendment. Recent political realignments have strengthened the ruling alliance, with several MPs from opposition parties extending support, even as some regional parties have indicated they may back the proposal if safeguards for states are incorporated.

Another closely watched development will be Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's decision on petitions relating to the merger claims of 20 Trinamool Congress MPs and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs , rulings that could further alter the numerical strength of political blocs in Parliament.

Apart from the constitutional amendment, the government has listed several significant legislations, including the FCRA Amendment Bill , the Vikshit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill , a proposal to make the obstruction or insult of Vande Mataram a criminal offence, and bills to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges and provide tax exemptions for foreign investments in government bonds.

The Congress has announced that it will raise issues ranging from institutional capture, political defections, corruption allegations, price rise, foreign policy and ethanol blending , while also targeting the government over the NEET paper leak and the Ayodhya donation controversy.

With the government prioritising the passage of legislation and the opposition preparing coordinated protests inside and outside Parliament, the Monsoon Session is expected to witness heated debates, political manoeuvring and repeated disruptions before it concludes on August 13 .
