Parliament Halted Without Meeting: Nepal Faces Fresh Political Uncertainty
In an unusual move reflecting growing political uncertainty, Ramchandra Paudel on Thursday suspended the upcoming session of the Federal Parliament before it could even convene , citing “special reasons.”
The session of both houses, the House of Representatives and the National Assembly had earlier been summoned for April 30 on the recommendation of the Cabinet on April 21. However, acting again on the advice of the government and the Council of Ministers, the President approved its suspension without disclosing specific grounds , according to presidential spokesperson Ritesh Kumar Shakya.
While no official explanation has been provided, the decision comes against the backdrop of mounting political instability and internal turbulence within the ruling establishment. Senior-most parliamentarian and Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh K C termed the move “unprecedented and surprising,” raising concerns over transparency and parliamentary norms.
The suspension follows a series of developments that have shaken Nepal’s political landscape . Just a day earlier, Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned amid allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Balendra Shah dismissed Labour Minister Dip Kumar Sah on the recommendation of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), signalling internal discord within the coalition .
These back-to-back developments have fueled speculation that the government may have sought to delay parliamentary scrutiny and avoid immediate political confrontation . Nepal’s current government, led by Shahpopularly known as “Balen”came to power in a historic electoral shift , significantly weakening traditional political parties after last year’s youth-led protests demanding systemic reforms and corruption-free governance .
However, the promise of a new political order now appears to be facing early challenges , with governance pressures and allegations testing the stability of the administration.
The abrupt suspension of Parliament without convening has sparked debate over democratic practices and executive overreach . Critics argue that Parliament remains a crucial forum for accountability , particularly during times of political uncertainty.
With no clarity yet on when the session will be reconvened, the move is likely to intensify scrutiny and deepen political tensions in the coming days.
