Parliament Enters Budget Recess, Adjourned Till March 9
Parliament was adjourned on Friday till March 9 , bringing the first phase of the Budget Session to an end and paving the way for a three week recess during which parliamentary committees will examine budgetary proposals.
The Rajya Sabha met at 11 am and took up Zero Hour and Question Hour before being adjourned at 1 pm. Earlier in the day, proceedings in the Lok Sabha were also adjourned till March 9.
The Budget Session began on January 28 with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026-27 in Parliament on February 1.
During the first phase of the session, Parliament passed one piece of legislation, the Industrial Relations Code Amendment Bill 2026 . The Bill was cleared by voice vote in both Houses and seeks to provide legal clarity on the repeal of three labour laws, the Trade Union Act 1926, the Industrial Employment Standing Orders Act 1946 and the Industrial Disputes Act 1947, which were subsumed under the Industrial Relations Code 2020. The government said the amendment does not alter the existing labour framework and was introduced to avoid legal ambiguity over the continuity of repealed laws.
With Parliament now in recess, department related standing committees will scrutinise the demands for grants of various ministries. Their reports are expected to be tabled when the second phase of the Budget Session begins on March 9.
When Parliament reconvenes, it is scheduled to take up detailed discussions on ministry wise allocations, voting on demands for grants in the Lok Sabha and consideration and passage of the Finance Bill, which gives statutory backing to the government’s taxation proposals for the next financial year.
