The Budget Session of Parliament 2026 concluded on Saturday, April 18, with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die , marking the end of an intensive and high-output legislative cycle that stretched over nearly three months.

According to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the session stood out for its strong productivity levels, with the Lok Sabha recording approximately 93% productivity and the Rajya Sabha surpassing it with around 110% productivity , reflecting sustained legislative engagement and effective utilisation of scheduled sittings.

81-day session with 31 sittings

The session, which began on January 28, 2026, spanned 81 days and included 31 sittings in total , divided into three phases. The Houses were also adjourned during the session to allow parliamentary standing committees to examine demands for grants, ensuring detailed scrutiny of budgetary allocations.

Despite interruptions and periods of heated debate, both Houses managed to complete substantial legislative and financial business within the available time frame.

Budget and financial business at the core

The Union Budget 2026-27 , presented on February 1, formed the central focus of the session. General discussions on the Budget engaged members extensively, with participation from nearly 160 MPs across both Houses .

Key financial legislation, including the Finance Bill, 2026 , and multiple Appropriation Bills, were passed, ensuring continuity in government expenditure and fiscal planning for the new financial year. Supplementary demands for grants and ministry-wise allocations were also debated and approved.

Legislative output: 9 bills passed

A total of 12 Bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha , while 1 Bill originated in the Rajya Sabha . After detailed discussion and scrutiny, 9 Bills were passed by both Houses , marking a significant legislative output for the session.

Among the major legislations passed were:

• Finance Bill, 2026

• Industrial Relations Code (Amendment) Bill, 2026

• Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026

• Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2026

• Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Bill, 2026

• Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026

• Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026

One Constitution Amendment Bill related to women’s reservation could not be passed due to the requirement of a special majority under Article 368 , leading to the discontinuation of linked bills.

Debates, disruptions and key moments

The session also witnessed significant parliamentary debates and political exchanges. A notable highlight was the motion seeking removal of the Lok Sabha Speaker , which was debated over two days before being defeated.

The Prime Minister made important statements in both Houses on the evolving situation in West Asia and its implications for India, underscoring foreign policy concerns during the session.

While the Lok Sabha saw interruptions during certain debates, including the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address , the Rajya Sabha maintained relatively higher engagement levels, contributing to its higher productivity score.

Conclusion of a busy legislative cycle

With high productivity , multiple landmark legislations, and extensive financial discussions, the Budget Session 2026 concluded on a productive note. The government and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry have described the session as one of the more efficient ones in recent years in terms of output versus time.

As Parliament adjourns, attention now turns to the implementation of key laws passed and preparations for the upcoming monsoon session , where further legislative priorities are expected to be taken up.
