Pandya’s record blitz powers India to 3–1 T20I series win over South Africa

Hardik Pandya signed off India’s T20I season in emphatic fashion, blasting his way into the record books as the hosts crushed South Africa by 30 runs to clinch the five-match series 3-1 on Friday. In front of a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, India combined explosive batting with timely strikes to underline their depth and momentum heading into the new year.

Pandya’s breathtaking 16-ball half-century, the second-fastest ever by an Indian in T20Is and a fluent 73 from Tilak Varma powered India to a towering 231 for 5. South Africa threatened briefly in reply, largely due to Quinton de Kock’s aggression at the top, but a dramatic middle-overs collapse triggered by Varun Chakravarthy’s four-wicket burst derailed the chase. The visitors eventually finished on 201 for 8, well short of the target.

Chasing 232, South Africa began with intent. De Kock went hard at left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh in the powerplay, carving six boundaries and a six to keep the required rate in check. With India holding back Jasprit Bumrah for the later overs, the Proteas raced ahead early, even as Reeza Hendricks struggled to convert his start. Hendricks’ scratchy stay ended when Shivam Dube pulled off a sharp one-handed catch at midwicket, giving Chakravarthy his first wicket.

De Kock, however, continued to dominate, finding an able partner in Dewald Brevis. The duo added 51 runs off just 23 balls, and at the halfway mark South Africa were well placed, having reached 120 for 1 in the 11th over. The chase appeared firmly on course.

That changed quickly. Bumrah, introduced at the right moment, deceived De Kock into a mistimed return catch, swinging the momentum India’s way. Pandya followed up by bouncing out Brevis, and suddenly the pressure mounted on the middle order.

The decisive blow came from Chakravarthy. In a game-turning 13th over, the mystery spinner struck twice in two balls. He trapped Aiden Markram leg-before as the South African skipper attempted a paddle sweep, then produced a delivery that slid past Donovan Ferreira’s defence to uproot the off stump. David Miller’s dismissal soon after effectively shut the door, as South Africa lost seven wickets for 81 runs and never recovered.

Earlier, India’s innings had been built on controlled aggression before Pandya unleashed a late onslaught. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson set the tone with a brisk 63-run stand. Both played freely, offering a glimpse of a potential opening combination in the absence of the injured Shubman Gill. Samson looked particularly assured, mixing power with timing, before being undone by a sharp-turning delivery from George Linde that clipped the middle stump.

India briefly lost momentum after skipper Suryakumar Yadav fell cheaply again, but Pandya’s arrival transformed the tempo. Walking out to loud cheers at his former IPL home ground, Pandya went “hammer and tongs,” clearing the ropes with ease and punishing anything in his arc. His half-century came off just 16 balls, second only to Yuvraj Singh’s iconic 12-ball fifty in 2007.

Tilak Varma provided the perfect foil. Calm and composed, he anchored the innings with a well-paced 73 off 42 balls, finding gaps regularly and rotating the strike smartly. Together, Pandya and Tilak added a stunning 105 runs off just 44 balls for the fourth wicket, taking India from a strong position to an imposing one.

Pandya finished with 63 off 25 balls, an innings studded with five sixes and five fours, some of which sailed deep into the stands and even caused minor injuries among ground staff and broadcast crew, a testament to the force of his hitting.

With the ball, Bumrah’s controlled spell and Chakravarthy’s decisive breakthroughs ensured India closed out the match clinically. The win not only sealed the series but also capped a dominant home season, with Pandya’s all-round impact standing out as the defining highlight of the night.
