Palghar Road Crisis: Vivek Tiwari’s Hunger Strike Continues as Health Concerns Grow

The “Sadak Satyagraha” led by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activist Vivek Tiwari over poor roads and inadequate infrastructure in Palghar district continued for nearly a week. The agitation is centred on the Vasai-Virar region, where residents have long complained about potholes, damaged surfaces, waterlogging and civic infrastructure.

Tiwari’s hunger strike entered its sixth day on Thursday. A CJP delegation visited the protest site to express solidarity and assess the protesters’ worsening health. No medical bulletin detailing Tiwari’s vital signs, diagnosis or hospitalisation has been reported. The condition of fellow protesters has not been disclosed in detail.

The protest’s central demands are for better roads, urgent repairs, improved infrastructure and greater accountability from authorities. Local Congress leaders and other politicians have backed the agitation, increasing political pressure on the administration.

There is, however, no publicly documented announcement as of August 21 of a special Maharashtra government package, written assurance or time-bound settlement specifically addressing the hunger strike. The Palghar administration has separately pursued infrastructure-related action, while VVCMC has continued planning and spending on roads and civic works.

VVCMC’s 2026-27 budget of about Rs 4,206.87 crore prioritises infrastructure. The plan includes concretisation of major roads and a proposed 38-km ring road. A fresh Detailed Project Report for the Vasai Ring Road has also been pursued at the state level. It remains a longer-term project, not an immediate response to the protest.

The region’s infrastructure burden has been compounded by the July floods. VVCMC has sought a Rs 1,000-crore relief package from the Maharashtra government for restoring damaged civic infrastructure and undertaking longer-term flood-mitigation measures.

Despite these initiatives, there is no evidence that the current projects have resolved the road complaints driving the Satyagraha. Nor is there reliable reporting of a major traffic blockade caused by the protest itself. For residents, the disruption remains poor roads, recurring potholes and monsoon waterlogging, which continue to affect daily commuting across Vasai-Virar.
