A moment of curiosity and concern swept through Bakhog village in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district on Sunday when locals spotted a balloon bearing markings resembling those of Pakistan. The balloon, with the letters “PIA” in green and other symbols associated with Pakistan, was noticed by Lokendra Thakur and his wife as they headed toward their farmland.

The sighting prompted villagers to alert authorities immediately. Police and administrative teams rushed to the site , conducting a preliminary inspection. Officials confirmed that the object was an ordinary toy balloon with no device, tracking equipment, or security threat attached.

Rajgarh DSP Vidyachand Negi reassured the public, stating, “Prima facie, the balloon does not appear dangerous. There is no need for panic .” He urged residents to remain alert and report any unusual or suspicious objects to authorities.

Similar balloons have been reported in Himachal’s Una, Bilaspur, and Kangra districts in the past. Authorities explained that such objects are frequently released near the India-Pakistan border , particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, for purposes ranging from recreational and religious messaging to publicity activities .

Officials noted that recent strong winds could have carried the balloon across long distances, eventually landing in Sirmaur. In previous instances, balloons marked with “PIA” or similar symbols have appeared in the state, sometimes raising initial concern, but none were ever found to contain harmful materials .

While the sighting briefly stirred curiosity among villagers, authorities emphasized that not all foreign-marked objects pose a threat . The incident highlights the importance of vigilance, prompt reporting, and the role of authorities in assessing and ensuring public safety .
