At least 24 people were killed and more than 100 injured after a powerful explosion targeted a shuttle train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Sunday, according to updated official and media reports. The blast occurred near Chaman Phatak railway station in Quetta, close to the cantonment area.

The train, running between Quetta Cantt and the City Railway Station , had moved a short distance when the explosion struck. The blast severely damaged multiple coaches, causing at least two carriages to derail and catch fire. Nearby buildings and vehicles were also damaged due to the impact, with residents reporting a loud explosion heard across several kilometres .

Authorities said early findings point to a suspected suicide-style attack involving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) , though investigations are still ongoing and the exact method has not been officially confirmed.

The banned militant group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility, describing it as a “fidayeen” suicide operation allegedly targeting security personnel travelling on the train. Officials said the claim is under verification.

Security and railway sources said the train was carrying civilians along with security personnel and their families , many returning ahead of the Eid holidays, contributing to the high casualty toll.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed that the blast hit the engine and multiple coaches, calling it a “cowardly act of terrorism” and blaming hostile elements seeking instability.

Emergency teams launched large-scale rescue operations as Quetta hospitals were placed under medical emergency , with several injured in critical condition and blood donation appeals issued.

Rail services, including the Jaffar Express route , were suspended or diverted. A region-wide high alert was imposed as security forces cordoned off the area.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and ordered urgent relief and investigation. The incident underscores continuing militant violence in Balochistan, where railways and security targets have repeatedly come under attack.
