Pakistan has successfully test-fired an extended version of the Fatah-4 ground-launched cruise missile, signalling its continued effort to expand its conventional precision-strike capabilities. The October 6 test comes less than five months after Pakistan conducted a successful test of the Fatah-4 in May.

The Pakistan Army said the indigenously developed weapon is equipped with advanced avionics and state-of-the-art navigational aids and can engage targets at extended ranges with high precision and lethality. The latest test also validated technical parameters of various subsystems intended to improve the missile’s accuracy and survivability.

Pakistan has not disclosed the exact range of the extended version. The baseline Fatah-4 has previously been reported to have a range of around 750 km, along with a subsonic flight profile and terrain-hugging capability designed to make detection and interception more difficult. Earlier reported specifications included a maximum altitude of 50 metres, a length of 7.5 metres, a weight of 1,530 kg and a speed of about Mach 0.7. These specifications should not automatically be applied to the new extended version because Pakistan has not released its detailed technical configuration.

The focus on greater range, precision and survivability is significant because a ground-launched cruise missile can provide a stand-off strike capability, potentially allowing targets to be engaged without aircraft entering heavily defended airspace. However, the operational significance of the new missile will depend on factors including its actual range, guidance accuracy, reliability, mobility, deployment numbers and the ability of opposing air-defence systems to detect and intercept it.

The Fatah-4 is associated with Pakistan’s Army Rocket Force Command, which has been developing and testing conventional long-range strike capabilities. In May, Pakistan conducted a Fatah-4 test focused on troop operational efficiency and validation of technical parameters. In April, the Army Rocket Force Command also conducted a training launch of the Fateh-II missile system, while the Pakistan Navy tested its indigenous Taimoor air-launched cruise missile.

The latest Fatah-4 launch was witnessed by senior Pakistan Army officers, scientists and engineers involved in its development. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and the service chiefs congratulated those involved.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also called the test an important advance for the country’s defence sector and congratulated the scientists and engineers.
