Two Pakistan Army pilots were killed on Monday after a training aircraft crashed near Quetta in Balochistan province due to a technical fault, the army said. The Mushshak training aircraft of Pakistan Army Aviation crashed near Nawan Killi, on the outskirts of Quetta, around midday, according to an official statement.

The two pilots onboard were identified as Major Husnain Shehzad Humayun, who was serving as the instructor, and Captain Abdul Samad, a student pilot. Both died in what the army described as an “unfortunate crash”. The military did not provide further details about the circumstances leading to the accident or indicate whether an investigation had been initiated.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief and sorrow over the deaths of the two officers. The incident comes months after another fatal aviation accident involving Pakistan Army Aviation. In June, an Mi-17 military helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing all personnel onboard.

Military aircraft accidents have periodically raised concerns about operational safety and technical reliability, although the army has not provided any broader assessment linking the two incidents.

The latest crash occurred near Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, a region where the Pakistan Army maintains a significant presence. The Mushshak is a basic training aircraft used to train pilots, including those preparing for more advanced flying duties.

The army's initial statement attributed Monday's crash to a technical fault but did not specify the nature of the malfunction. Further information about the flight, the aircraft's condition before take-off and the precise sequence of events leading to the crash was not immediately available.

The deaths of the instructor and student pilot are a setback for the military aviation unit, which relies on training aircraft to prepare personnel for operational responsibilities. No additional casualties were reported in the statement issued by the army.
