The Supreme Court on Monday said it was “slightly in pain” over a narrative suggesting the judiciary was delaying or influencing the investigation into the death of former model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma, and stressed that the matter must be probed fairly and impartially.

Sharma, 33, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12, months after marrying lawyer Samarth Singh. Her family has accused her husband and in-laws, including former district judge Giribala Singh, of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide , while the accused side alleged she struggled with drug addiction and emotional distress.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said it was “quite unfortunate” that allegations were being made that the judiciary was not permitting a fair trial because one of the accused was a retired judge.

“We are slightly in pain because of some of the actions. Let things move as per law and procedure,” the bench said, while urging restraint from all sides.

The court asked the media not to sensationalise the case or record statements of family members and potential witnesses. “We request the media not to reduce their pain to sound bites,” it observed.

The bench also directed both families to place their versions only before investigators and urged the public to avoid speculation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh government, informed the court that the state had recommended a CBI probe . “It is better to have a divorced daughter than a dead one,” he remarked.

The apex court disposed of the suo motu proceedings after noting that the Central Bureau of Investigation would take over the case and ensure a fair, independent and impartial investigation .
