Senior diplomat P Kumaran has formally assumed charge as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, marking his transition from High Commissioner-designate to India’s top diplomatic representative in London.

A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Kumaran was most recently serving as Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs before taking up the assignment. He succeeds Vikram Doraiswami , who has been appointed India’s Ambassador to China as part of a wider diplomatic reshuffle in senior postings.

Kumaran’s appointment was cleared by the MEA in March 2026, and he assumed office in London shortly thereafter. He brings extensive experience from key diplomatic assignments, including earlier postings as Ambassador to Qatar and High Commissioner to Singapore , along with roles in Cairo, Brussels, Washington and Colombo.

On arrival in London, he was received at India House by Deputy High Commissioner Kartik Pande and UK Foreign Office representative Gordon Wetherell CMG. The High Commission of India welcomed him, expressing confidence in further strengthening the India–UK strategic partnership , which has recently expanded across trade, defence and technology cooperation.

Kumaran is fluent in English, Hindi, Tamil and Arabic. His formal diplomatic accreditation will be completed after he presents his credentials to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in a traditional ceremony involving submission of the Letter of Commission issued by President Droupadi Murmu.

The ceremony marks the official completion of his posting and the full commencement of his tenure in the United Kingdom.
