Hyderabad is often synonymous with glittering IT corridors, the historic Charminar, or the world-famous biryani. However, amidst this concrete sprawl, how many are aware of the two magnificent "green lungs" that help the city breathe? Kasu Brahmananda Reddy (KBR) National Park and Mrugavani National Park are not just clusters of trees; they are the pillars of the city's biodiversity. While one integrates nature into a modern lifestyle right in the heart of the city, the other offers an authentic forest experience on the city's outskirts. Through this special feature, let us explore the greatness of these two sanctuaries, the differences between them, and the vital role they play in sustaining the city.

KBR Park: A Green Oasis in the Heart of the City

Spanning approximately 390 acres in Jubilee Hills, one of Hyderabad’s most affluent neighborhoods, KBR Park is a magnificent urban sanctuary. Declared a National Park in 1994, this area was once the personal property of Prince Mukarram Jah, the heir of the Nizams. The Chiran Palace and other historic structures within the park still stand as reminders of royal grandeur. Despite being surrounded by high-rises and incessant traffic, stepping inside the park transports you to another world filled with the chirping of birds. It serves as a primary 'carbon sink,' controlling the city's rising pollution and providing fresh air to its residents.

Health is Wealth: A Haven for Fitness Lovers

KBR Park is more than just a forest; it is a social wellness hub. The 5-kilometer walking track outside the park serves as a fitness platform for thousands of citizens every day. The hustle and bustle of walkers begins as early as 5:00 AM. From politicians and film celebrities to IT employees and common citizens, everyone is seen here. Inside the park, the open gym and yoga centers guide people toward a healthier lifestyle. The discussions held during morning walks and the gathering of friends have transformed this park into a strong platform for social connection.

KBR Biodiversity: Wildlife Amidst Ancient Rocks

The ancient rock formations, a hallmark of the Deccan Plateau, are a major attraction at KBR Park. Amidst these rocks, over 600 plant species and hundreds of bird species thrive. The number of peacocks living here often surprises tourists. Around 140 bird species , including the Indian Roller, owls, and parakeets, call this place home. Beyond birds, it is a safe habitat for mammals like mongooses, jungle cats, monitor lizards, and the rarely seen pangolin (scaly anteater). The dense bushes and trees of this park play a crucial role in reducing high urban temperatures.

Mrugavani National Park: An Authentic Forest Path

Located about 25 kilometers west of Hyderabad near Chilkur, Mrugavani National Park offers a starkly different experience. Covering about 850 acres , this park is twice the size of KBR and boasts a completely forested environment. What you see here is not a man-made garden, but a piece of raw, natural wilderness. With dense woods, vast grasslands, and towering watchtowers, Mrugavani unveils a different world. It is an excellent destination for those seeking a 'day trip' away from the city or for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the environment.

Experiences in Mrugavani: Safari and Environmental Education

The primary attraction of Mrugavani Park is the Jungle Safari . Traveling deep into the forest in a specially arranged bus to see animals in their natural habitat is a thrilling experience. Groups of spotted deer (Cheetal) , Sambar deer, and wild boars can be seen roaming freely. The 'Environmental Education Center' and museum provide students with valuable information regarding wildlife conservation. For bird lovers, Mrugavani is a festival; warblers, flowerpeckers, and various migratory birds delight the eyes. The Butterfly Park within the premises, featuring colorful butterflies, is a special draw for young children.

Our Role in Environmental Conservation

Comparing these two parks, KBR prioritizes fitness and quick relaxation, while Mrugavani serves as a venue for environmental education and forest exploration. It is a matter of pride that a metropolis like Hyderabad has preserved such incredible greenery. These parks are not just tourist spots; they are fighting a silent battle to recharge groundwater levels and cool the city's climate. All we need to do is avoid plastic usage when visiting these parks, refrain from disturbing the wildlife, and ensure this green heritage is passed down safely to future generations.

Visitor Information:

KBR Park: Open from 5:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Mrugavani Park: Open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Closed on Mondays).
