Owaisi Backs Opposition Alliance to Challenge BJP in Uttar Pradesh
AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has declared that his party will make every possible effort to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from returning to power in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Reiterating his party’s political objective, Owaisi said defeating the BJP would remain a priority, while maintaining that other political parties must develop their own strategies to achieve the same goal.
Owaisi made these remarks while responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s prediction that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition parties would face a crushing defeat in the next general election. He said AIMIM had continued its political battle in Hyderabad despite senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, campaigning against him. Owaisi asserted that his party would remain committed to preventing the BJP from securing another term at the Centre.
On the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana, Owaisi claimed that AIMIM had done more work than any other political party in the state over the past three months to assist voters. He said the party had developed a dedicated mobile application to help people from different religious communities address issues related to the electoral roll revision. The initiative had also provided assistance in Maharashtra, Delhi and three districts of Uttarakhand. Questioning the efforts of other parties, he asked why they had not introduced similar measures to support voters.
Although AIMIM opposes the manner in which the SIR exercise is being conducted, Owaisi acknowledged that the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the process. He said the party was exploring its legal options and had already filed a review petition before the apex court. On Wednesday, he approached the Supreme Court challenging the manner in which the voter list revision was being carried out.
Meanwhile, Owaisi called for a united opposition front in Uttar Pradesh to prevent the BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath from returning to power for a third consecutive term. He expressed readiness to hold discussions with the Samajwadi Party and other interested parties to explore an alliance. Responding to questions about the October 2 deadline reportedly set for forming the opposition bloc, Owaisi said negotiations were still underway, indicating that efforts to build a united front had not concluded.
