The Election Commission of India on Wednesday said it successfully blocked over 68 lakh cyberattack attempts targeting its election-related digital platforms during the counting of votes for five Assembly elections on May 4.

The Commission said the attacks originated from both domestic and overseas sources , though it did not specify the countries involved. The attempts mainly targeted critical platforms, including the election results portal, during counting in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.

According to the EC, its digital platform ECINET and cybersecurity systems handled the threats without affecting election operations. The platform was used for real-time monitoring, faster reporting and improving transparency during the electoral process.

The Commission said ECINET recorded more than 98.3 crore hits on polling days held on April 9, 23 and 29. On counting day, the system managed traffic averaging nearly three crore hits per minute .

Launched officially in January this year after being tested during the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the ECINET mobile application has crossed 10 crore downloads , the poll body said.

The EC also introduced a QR code-based photo identity system at counting centres for the first time. More than 3.2 lakh QR codes were generated across states and Union Territories to ensure entry only for authorised personnel and strengthen security at counting venues.
