Authorities said over 300 families were evacuated in the Philippines after heavy ashfall from Mayon Volcano, caused by a sudden collapse of lava deposits on its slopes.

Authorities clarified that this is a natural volcanic activity , not a man-made or “forced” event. There was no major explosive eruption , but accumulated lava on the volcano’s slope collapsed, triggering a pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving mixture of hot ash, gas, and volcanic debris .

Officials confirmed that there have been no deaths or injuries , although the situation caused widespread disruption and precautionary evacuations.

The ashfall spread across 87 villages in three towns , severely affecting visibility and daily movement. Local officials said roads were covered in thick ash, with near-zero visibility in some areas , leading to traffic disruption and public concern.

The volcanic activity has also impacted health conditions , as fine ash particles can cause breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and risks for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Authorities have advised residents to wear masks and stay indoors where possible.

Agricultural damage has been reported, with vegetable farms covered in ash and livestock losses including four water buffaloes and one cow . Cleanup operations are underway in affected towns.

Transport and daily life have also been affected, with delays in movement and temporary disruption of outdoor work and schooling in some areas.

Officials noted that although conditions have stabilised for now, the volcano remains active. Mayon, standing at 2,462 metres (8,077 feet) , is the most active volcano in the Philippines and part of a network of 24 monitored volcanoes.

The area had already been under Alert Level 3 since January , indicating ongoing volcanic unrest, with risks of rockfalls, ash emissions, and possible further eruptions.Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, warning that volcanic hazards may persist despite the current calm.
