In a serious pre-election security concern , police in Bhangar recovered nearly 100 crude bombs from a residential house on Sunday, just days before the crucial second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 .

The explosives were seized during a targeted search operation at the residence of Rafikul Islam , who is reportedly linked to the All India Trinamool Congress . Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police conducted the raid and uncovered the cache, raising concerns about possible attempts to intimidate voters ahead of polling.

Authorities moved swiftly following the recovery, with the Election Commission of India issuing a strict warning to senior police officials across the state. The Commission made it clear that any lapse in preventing the use of explosives or coercive tactics would invite direct action against officers responsible for maintaining law and order.

Officials have now intensified surveillance and area domination exercises , especially in vulnerable and sensitive pockets , to ensure that voters can participate in the democratic process without fear or pressure. Security forces are being deployed strategically to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents.

The timing of the seizure is significant. The first phase of polling for the 294-member Assembly concluded on April 23, while Bhangar is set to vote in the second phase on April 29 . The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

This incident has once again brought the spotlight on election-related violence and political tensions in the state. As campaigning enters its final stretch, authorities appear determined to send a clear message: any attempt to disrupt free and fair elections will be dealt with firmly.
