Oscar-winning ‘Godzilla Minus One’ sequel set for 2026 theatrical release

The legacy of the world’s most iconic movie monster is set to continue, with the makers officially confirming the release of the much-anticipated sequel to Godzilla Minus One . Titled Godzilla Minus Zero , the film will arrive in Japanese theatres on November 3, 2026 , followed by a North American release on November 6.

The sequel marks the return of director and screenwriter Takashi Yamazaki , who played a key role in the global success of Godzilla Minus One in 2023. North American distribution will be handled by GKids , which had earlier brought the Oscar-winning film to international audiences.

Notably, the Japanese release date holds symbolic significance. November 3 is celebrated as Godzilla Day, commemorating the release of the original Godzilla film in 1954. Godzilla Minus One itself premiered in Japan on November 2, 2023, reinforcing the franchise’s deep-rooted cinematic history.

While details regarding the cast and storyline of Godzilla Minus Zero remain tightly guarded, production is currently underway at Toho Studios . Robot is producing the film, with visual effects being crafted by Shirogumi, the same studio lauded for its work on the previous installment.

Announcing the project earlier, GKids president David Jesteadt said the company was honoured to bring the next chapter of Godzilla to North American theatres, calling it another defining moment for the most colossal monster ever to dominate the screen.

Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One was set in post-World War II Japan and followed a disgraced kamikaze pilot seeking redemption amid the devastation caused by Godzilla. Made on a modest budget of USD 15 million, the film went on to collect USD 113 million worldwide and earned widespread acclaim across Hollywood.

The film also made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects , becoming the first Godzilla movie in the franchise’s 70-year history to take home an Oscar.
