Operation Sindoor: Not Trump, Not China, India Decided for Itself

India on Tuesday firmly rejected China’s claim that it played any mediating role in the ceasefire that followed Operation Sindoor , underlining that the decision to halt military action against Pakistan was taken independently by New Delhi after its objectives were achieved.

The clarification came after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi suggested that Beijing had helped defuse tensions between India and Pakistan. Indian officials reiterated that the ceasefire emerged from direct hotline talks between the Directors General of Military Operations on May 10, stressing that no third party was involved in either the conduct of operations or the decision to pause them.

Operation Sindoor was launched in May in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians . India carried out precision missile strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir , with officials maintaining that the operation was meant to convey a clear deterrent message not to trigger a prolonged conflict. The cessation of hostilities followed once India assessed that Pakistan had “received the message it intended to send.”

Government sources pointed out that it is routine for foreign capitals to express concern and engage in diplomatic conversations whenever a regional conflict escalates, particularly between two nuclear-armed neighbours . Such outreach, they said, should not be mistaken for mediation or decision-making authority . Indian diplomats, for instance, have similarly expressed concern during conflicts such as the Israel–Gaza war and the Russia–Ukraine war , without influencing the choices of the parties involved.

The Congress questioned the government over repeated foreign claims of involvement , arguing that New Delhi should clearly explain why leaders like former U.S. President Donald Trump earlier, and now China, have projected themselves as peacemakers . The government countered that backchannel communications are a normal feature of global diplomacy and should not be selectively politicised .

India has consistently maintained that decisions on escalation or de-escalation are sovereign choices , taken on its own terms, and that external commentary whether from Washington or Beijing does not alter the reality that Operation Sindoor and its conclusion were India’s call alone .
