Operation Sindoor Strategist Air Marshal A K Bharti Retires After 39 Years

Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar (A K) Bharti, the officer who spearheaded the Indian Air Force's operational planning during Operation Sindoor, retired on Friday after an illustrious 39-year career, concluding a distinguished journey marked by combat leadership, strategic planning and efforts to modernise the IAF. He superannuated as the Deputy Chief of Air Staff (DCAS), leaving behind a legacy that shaped India's evolving air power capabilities.

On his final day in uniform, Air Marshal Bharti paid tribute to the nation's fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The memorial shared photographs of the ceremony, describing it as a mark of respect for the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.

Bharti served as Director General Air Operations (DGAO) during Operation Sindoor, India's most significant air campaign in recent decades. Following the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed, India launched the operation on May 7, carrying out precision strikes on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The campaign later expanded to target Pakistani air bases, radar installations, integrated air defence systems and command-and-control facilities before military hostilities ceased on May 10 following hotline talks between the two sides.

As the IAF's chief operational planner, Bharti oversaw mission planning, combat readiness and intelligence integration during the campaign. Defence experts regard Operation Sindoor as a landmark demonstration of India's network-centric warfare, precision strike capability and seamless tri-service coordination. Alongside Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai and Vice Admiral A N Pramod, he also became the public face of the operation through a series of tri-service media briefings.

Recognising his operational leadership, the government appointed him Deputy Chief of Air Staff in June 2025. In that role, he played an important part in advancing the IAF's long-term modernisation agenda by promoting indigenisation, defence innovation, precision-guided weapons, drones and network-enabled command-and-control systems under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. His tenure also strengthened joint operational planning among the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot on June 13, 1987, Air Marshal Bharti graduated from the Air Force Academy with the Sword of Honour and went on to log more than 5,000 flying hours on multiple fighter aircraft, including the Su-30MKI. During his career, he commanded frontline fighter squadrons, air bases and key operational formations, besides serving as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Offensive Operations), Chief Staff Officer (Air Vector Strategy) at the Strategic Forces Command, Senior Air Staff Officer of Central Air Command and Air Attaché to Malaysia.

A recipient of the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vayu Sena Medal (VM), Air Marshal Bharti retires as one of the key architects of India's contemporary air power, remembered for leading Operation Sindoor and helping steer the Indian Air Force towards a more self-reliant, technology-driven and integrated future.
