‘Operation Prahar’ launched in Dehradun after Retired Brigadier’s tragic killing

In a decisive move to tackle rising crime in the state capital, the Uttarakhand government has launched “Operation Prahar” following the killing of retired Army officer Brigadier Mukesh Joshi on Mussoorie Road on March 30. Joshi, out for a morning walk, was reportedly caught in a gunfight between two groups , raising serious concerns over citizen safety.

The operation, spearheaded by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and State DGP Deepam Seth , aims to curb illegal activities, late-night crimes , and unruly elements across Dehradun. Officials say the drive will focus on enhancing police presence, accountability , and proactive policing in crime hotspots.

A high-level meeting at the police headquarters, attended by senior officials including Garhwal IG Rajiv Swaroop , STF IG Nilesh Anand Bharne , Dehradun SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal , and STF SSP Ajay Singh , finalized the strategies for the operation. Swaroop will monitor law and order daily , while Dobal ensures effective policing within jurisdictions .

Police circle officers and SHOs have been directed to remain vigilant during morning hours, intensify searches at checkpoints, and crack down on bars and pubs operating beyond permitted hours. Authorities will also undertake verification of paying guests, tenants, and homestays in the city.

Dehradun has witnessed a spike in violent incidents over the past two to three months, including murders, shootings, and physical altercations, prompting the government to adopt a firm approach to restore law and order.
