OpenAI has announced a major update to its ChatGPT platform, introducing a new paid tier called ChatGPT Go and testing sponsored ads in the free version . This move is aimed at generating revenue while keeping the free version accessible to millions of users worldwide.

Starting January 16, 2026, OpenAI began testing advertisements in the free version of ChatGPT while also launching its new ChatGPT Go subscription globally, including in the United States. Priced at $8 per month (approximately ₹660–₹700), the Go tier offers a significant upgrade over the free service, which will continue to remain available alongside the ad experiments.

In addition to the new subscription tier, OpenAI revealed that it will soon begin displaying sponsored ads to logged-in adult users in the U.S. on both the free and Go tiers. These ads will appear at the bottom of relevant responses , such as grocery suggestions under a recipe, and will be clearly labeled as sponsored content. This approach is meant to keep ads relevant and unobtrusive.

OpenAI has also set strict rules for the ad rollout to address privacy and sensitivity concerns. Ads will not appear near sensitive topics , including medical, financial, legal, or political content. Additionally, users under 18 will not see ads . OpenAI has emphasized that ads will not use personal data without consent and will remain separate from the AI’s core responses, ensuring advertisers cannot influence ChatGPT’s answers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company’s goal is to keep ads clearly distinct from the AI’s output and unobtrusive. He also stated that ads are a way to fund the free version and maintain access for users who cannot afford paid plans. Paid subscribers will have opt-out options , ensuring an ad-free experience for those who choose higher tiers.

This is a major shift in OpenAI’s business model, signaling a stronger focus on revenue generation. With the addition of advertising and a new paid tier, analysts expect the company’s valuation to rise significantly, potentially reaching new highs in the coming months.

The announcement has received mixed reactions. While some users and industry observers believe ads are necessary to sustain free access, others have criticized the move, calling it a step toward “enshittification” , a term used to describe product degradation due to monetization. The key question now is whether OpenAI can balance monetization with user trust while keeping ChatGPT’s core experience clean and reliable.
