OpenAI Gets 12-Month Exclusive Access to Disney, Marvel, Pixar Characters
Disney has been reported to have signed a three-year partnership with OpenAI, granting the AI company access to more than 200 of its iconic characters. While the overall deal spans three years, the exclusivity for OpenAI has been limited to just one year , according to Disney CEO Robert A. Iger.
The licensed characters include those from Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars franchises, such as Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Simba, Darth Vader, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Yoda. Under the agreement, OpenAI has been authorized to use these characters to generate AI videos on its Sora platform and AI images through ChatGPT.
As part of the arrangement, Disney has been reported to have invested $1 billion in OpenAI’s equity. In return, the company is expected to earn licensing fees while gaining access to OpenAI’s tools and technology. Disney’s strategy has been described as a measured entry into the AI sector, allowing the company to understand and adapt to emerging technologies while retaining control over its intellectual property (IP).
During an interview with CNBC, Iger stated that Disney does not oppose AI and that technological advancement is not intended to be resisted. “No human generation has ever stood in the way of technological advance, and we don't intend to try,” he remarked.
The partnership has also been seen as a move to protect Disney’s IP. Around the time of the announcement, the company reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google , accusing its AI systems of generating copyrighted content without authorization. Disney’s legal action has emphasized that AI companies must secure proper licensing before using its characters in their models.
The deal is expected to provide benefits for the general public as well. Users and creators can now generate AI-based videos and images of popular characters legally, offering new opportunities for creative expression, educational content, and interactive entertainment . Small creators, educators, and hobbyists may also save costs and time by leveraging AI tools instead of traditional production methods.
Following the initial 12-month exclusivity period, Disney retains the option to license its characters to other AI companies, potentially expanding public access to AI-driven content and allowing the company to maximize returns from its intellectual property.
