One-month-old Himalayan black bear Cub saved by forest officials in Arunachal Pradesh

A one-month-old Himalayan black bear cub was rescued by the Deomali Forest Division after being found near an agricultural field , officials said on Sunday.

According to Range Forest Officer (RFO) Diwang Lowang , the cub was first spotted on Saturday by a local resident, Pongpong Ruttum, in Borduria village. Acting promptly on the information, forest officials swiftly responded and safely took the cub into custody.

“The cub appeared weak and vulnerable , likely separated from its mother,” Lowang said. It was immediately provided with necessary care before being shifted to the Centre for Bear Rehabilitation and Conservation in Pakke Kessang. The cub is currently under the supervision of veterinarian Dr Panjit Basumatary, who is overseeing its recovery and rehabilitation .

The Himalayan black bear, native to the forests of the Himalayas and Northeast India, is classified as Vulnerable by conservation authorities. Known for its distinctive black coat and crescent-shaped white chest marking, the species plays a crucial role in maintaining forest ecosystems .

Ecologically, these bears act as important seed dispersers , aiding forest regeneration by spreading seeds across large distances. They also help maintain ecological balance by controlling insect populations and contributing to nutrient cycling .

However, habitat loss , human-wildlife conflict , and poaching continue to threaten their survival. Forest officials emphasized that timely intervention and community awareness , as demonstrated in this rescue, are vital for the conservation of such wildlife.

Authorities are now monitoring the cub’s health, with efforts focused on its eventual rehabilitation and possible release into the wild.
