One star, many questions: Senegal’s football World Cup jersey sparks controversy

Senegal’s World Cup jersey has unexpectedly turned into a talking point, with the team set to wear only one star instead of two . The issue is not just about kit design but about a larger controversy surrounding their Africa Cup of Nations title , which is now under dispute.

Earlier this year, Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations final, which should have marked their second continental triumph after their 2021 victory. Naturally, this meant a second star was expected to appear on their World Cup jersey. However, in a dramatic turn, the Confederation of African Football appeals board overturned the result and awarded a 3-0 default win to Morocco . The ruling was based on the claim that Senegal’s players had left the field without the referee’s permission, leading to the match being forfeited.

This decision has created a deep divide. While CAF has officially stripped Senegal of the title, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has refused to accept the verdict , continuing to call it “our victory.” This has left the team in a strange position, officially recognized as one-time champions, but internally claiming two titles .

Amid this confusion, the FSF clarified that the single star on the World Cup jersey is not an acceptance of CAF’s decision . Instead, it is due to practical reasons. Kit manufacturer Puma had already begun producing the jerseys months before the final was played, making it impossible to incorporate the second star in time for the tournament.

The federation has reassured fans that new jerseys with two stars are already in production and will be released after the World Cup. At the same time, Senegal is preparing to challenge CAF’s ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a legal process that could take considerable time.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has denied any bias in the decision, but the controversy continues to spark debate across the football world. For now, Senegal’s jersey carries just one star, but behind it lies a much bigger battle over recognition, fairness, and pride .
