One Selection Meeting, Three Big Questions: Agarkar’s Future, Pant’s Comeback, Pandya’s Return

India’s selection meeting for the upcoming West Indies white-ball series has become about much more than picking two squads. While the return of Hardik Pandya and a possible white-ball comeback for Rishabh Pant are among the major talking points, the meeting could also mark the final assignment of chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

The selection meeting in New Delhi was delayed to Wednesday evening, September 16, with the selectors set to finalise India’s squads for three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies. The ODI series begins on September 27, followed by the T20Is from October 6.

For Agarkar, however, the significance is personal as well as professional. His contract, initially due to expire in June, was extended until October 4, but there has reportedly been no communication from the BCCI leadership about another extension. He had hoped to continue through the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the silence has raised questions over whether Wednesday’s meeting will be his last.

According to reports, Agarkar has told people close to him that he may send a “thank-you note” to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia after the West Indies selection, acknowledging the opportunity to serve for three years. There is still no official announcement that he is stepping down. Speculation about VVS Laxman as a possible successor has also not been confirmed by the BCCI.

On the cricketing front, Pandya’s fitness is a key issue. He is scheduled to return to competitive cricket, but selectors must decide whether he is ready to bowl 10 overs and field for a full ODI. The shortage of seam-bowling all-rounders makes his availability particularly important.

Pant could also receive another opportunity after his indifferent IPL form pushed him out of the white-ball setup. With Ishan Kishan away at the Asian Games, Pant could come into contention, although KL Rahul remains the leading ODI wicketkeeping option.

The selectors also face decisions involving Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajat Patidar and Ravindra Jadeja, while Mohammed Siraj is expected to return after missing the England ODIs. With several regulars committed to the Asian Games and others injured, this selection meeting could shape India’s ODI plans well beyond the West Indies series.
