One Killed in Ukrainian Strike on Russia, Oil Facilities Again in the Crosshairs

A fresh wave of Ukrainian attacks struck targets deep inside Russia on Sunday, leaving one person dead and three others injured, while also damaging a tanker in the Azov-Black Sea maritime canal, according to Russian officials.

Authorities in Russia's Samara region said the strike caused damage to residential homes, apartment buildings and an industrial facility. Among the injured was a child. Russian media reports indicated that the Syzran Oil Refinery , owned by energy giant Rosneft , was the apparent target of the attack. Images circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising above the refinery, which lies roughly 800 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

The Syzran facility has been targeted several times during the war as Ukraine increasingly focuses on Russia's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian drone strikes have hit refineries, fuel depots and other strategic facilities across Russia in an effort to disrupt supplies and raise the economic cost of Moscow's military campaign.

In a separate incident, officials in the Rostov region said a tanker was damaged by a drone attack while travelling through the Azov-Black Sea maritime canal. The vessel was reportedly empty, and authorities said there was no danger of an oil spill.

The attacks come amid a broader escalation in the conflict. Russia has intensified missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has defended strikes on Russian energy facilities as part of what he calls a campaign of "long-range sanctions" aimed at pressuring Moscow to end its invasion.

Russia's Defence Ministry also claimed on Sunday that it had launched attacks on the Ukrainian ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk . Ukrainian officials had not immediately commented on the claim.

As both sides continue to target critical infrastructure, the war shows little sign of easing, with civilians increasingly bearing the consequences of a conflict that has entered its fifth year.
