On second day in Assam, Modi interacts with students, pays tribute to movement Martyrs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday carried out a packed schedule on the second day of his two-day visit to Assam , marked by student interaction, homage to martyrs of the Assam movement and the launch of a major fertiliser project, as the state prepares for Assembly elections next year.

The Prime Minister began the day by interacting with 25 meritorious students from different schools during a special session of ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’ , held aboard the cruise ship Charaideo while sailing on the Brahmaputra river. The half-hour interaction focused on examinations, stress management and students’ aspirations. Security was tightened along the riverfront for the event, and ferry services on the Brahmaputra were suspended till noon, officials said.

After the cruise interaction, Modi visited the newly constructed Swahid Smarak Kshetra , built in memory of the 860 martyrs of the Assam movement, a six-year-long anti-foreigner agitation that began in 1979. He paid floral tributes at the memorial, visited the martyrs’ gallery housing busts of those who lost their lives, and garlanded the statue of the first martyr, Khargeswar Talukdar .

The Prime Minister then travelled to Dibrugarh and onward to Namrup in Upper Assam, where he laid the foundation stone of a Rs 10,600 crore ammonia-urea fertiliser complex . The project is expected to strengthen fertiliser production, generate employment and give a significant boost to industrial and agricultural growth in the region. Modi later addressed a public rally in Namrup before leaving for New Delhi.

The visit assumes political significance with Assam Assembly elections due next year , and the Prime Minister’s engagements reflected a blend of development-focused announcements, youth outreach and symbolic gestures linked to the state’s history.

On Saturday, the first day of his visit, Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport , unveiled an 80-foot statue of Assam’s first chief minister Gopinath Bordoloi, addressed a public rally and participated in a roadshow in Guwahati.

Together, the two-day visit highlighted the Centre’s emphasis on infrastructure development, public engagement and political outreach in Assam ahead of the approaching elections.
