On Mathematics day, India links pure Maths to future tech jobs

On the eve of National Mathematics Day 2025, educational institutions and government bodies across India have rolled out seminars, exhibitions and talent programmes that connect pure mathematics with emerging careers in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Actuarial Science, drawing inspiration from the enduring legacy of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

At Sharda University, the Department of Mathematics and Data Science is organising a special seminar to mark the 138th birth anniversary of Ramanujan, focusing on the relevance of his mathematical ideas in AI, Machine Learning and Data Science. The event, being conducted in an online interactive format, is aimed at students and young researchers to demonstrate how classical mathematical foundations continue to drive modern technological innovation.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Agastya Foundation’s Ramanujan Math Park has drawn attention for its hands-on and experiential approach to learning mathematics. Through interactive exhibits, the Math Park showcases how mathematical patterns, sequences and logical reasoning translate into real-world applications, helping students view mathematics beyond textbooks.

The Srinivasa Ramanujan Institute for Basic Sciences (SRIBS) is also hosting advanced seminars exploring the link between Ramanujan’s work and modern cryptography, a 0

20critical components of secure digital systems and data science. Experts say such discussions are increasingly relevant for careers in cybersecurity, financial analytics and advanced computing.

At the state level, the Bihar Department of Science, Technology and Technical Education is hosting a major celebration at Gyan Bhavan, Patna, under the Ramanujan Talent Search and Awards programme. The event brings together students, educators and researchers, highlighting academic and professional pathways from school-level excellence to advanced research.

Meanwhile, the Union Government, on the eve of National Mathematics Day, reiterated its commitment to strengthening mathematics education and research across the country, recognising its foundational role in emerging sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, cybersecurity and actuarial sciences. Marking Ramanujan’s birth anniversary, the government noted that his legacy continues to inspire innovation-driven careers and advanced scientific research. Initiatives such as the Ramanujan Fellowship, support to national research institutions, and encouragement to states and universities to conduct outreach programmes reflect this focus. The government emphasised that nurturing mathematical thinking among students is vital for building a future-ready workforce and positioning India as a global knowledge and technology hub.

Experts are also directing students to national platforms such as the India Science, Technology and Innovation (ISTI) Portal, which highlights research opportunities inspired by Ramanujan’s work.

As India observes National Mathematics Day on December 22, this year’s initiatives underscore a growing consensus that Ramanujan’s ideas continue to shape careers in data-driven, risk-based and technology-intensive fields, well beyond the classroom.
