A routine enforcement operation turned tragic in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district on Monday when District Transport Officer (DTO) M. Venkanna was killed after being hit by a speeding coal-laden tipper lorry while performing official duties.

The accident occurred near the RTO office in Chelpur village of Ganapuram mandal around 9:30 a.m. Officials said Venkanna was overseeing the movement of a seized harvester vehicle into the RTO premises and had stepped onto the road to regulate traffic and ensure the vehicle's safe entry.

As he stood beside his official vehicle, a coal-loaded tipper lorry reportedly approached at high speed and struck him. The impact proved fatal, and the 55-year-old officer died on the spot. His body was later shifted to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the occupational risks faced by transport enforcement officials , who often work along busy highways and industrial routes with limited safety protection. Bhupalpally district, known for its coal transportation activity linked to the nearby mining belt, witnesses frequent movement of heavy commercial vehicles throughout the day.

Expressing deep shock over the tragedy, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and directed Transport Department officials to submit a detailed report. The Chief Minister also assured the bereaved family of all possible support from the state government.

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar described the incident as deeply unfortunate and said the government would stand firmly with Venkanna's family. In a message posted on X, the minister conveyed his condolences and reiterated that a thorough investigation had been ordered to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.

Police have seized the lorry involved in the crash and registered a case. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol , though investigators are examining whether overspeeding, negligence or other factors contributed to the fatal collision.

The death of Venkanna has sent shockwaves through the transport department, with colleagues and officials mourning the loss of an officer who died while carrying out his responsibilities. The tragedy has also renewed calls for stronger roadside safety protocols , protective measures and better traffic management arrangements for officers engaged in field enforcement duties.
