Omicron RF.5 Sub-Variant Detected in Four COVID-19 Samples in Andhra Pradesh

Health authorities in Andhra Pradesh have identified the Omicron RF.5 sub-variant in four COVID-19 positive samples collected from Kadapa district , prompting a review of the state's preparedness and surveillance measures.

According to Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav , the samples were sent for genome sequencing to a virology laboratory in Pune, where they were confirmed to contain the RF.5 strain. Following the receipt of the reports, the minister conducted a review with senior health officials to assess the current COVID-19 situation and discuss precautionary measures.

Officials said RF.5 is one of the many sub-lineages of the Omicron variant that have emerged through the natural evolution of the coronavirus. Health experts clarified that the strain is not a recombinant variant formed by the merger of two different variants. Instead, it is believed to have evolved from the JN.1 lineage through subsequent branches, including LF.7 and PY.1.1.1.

The Health Department noted that RF.5 has been reported in several countries, with a relatively higher presence in Singapore and parts of Southeast Asia . The variant is currently being monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of its routine genomic surveillance programme.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Vishnuvardhan , Director of Medical Education, said there is currently no scientific evidence to suggest that RF.5 is more severe or dangerous than other Omicron sub-variants. He urged the public not to panic while continuing to remain cautious and follow basic health precautions.

Medical experts stated that the symptoms associated with RF.5 are largely similar to those seen in other Omicron strains, including sore throat, cough, fever, headache and body aches .

The minister emphasized that the COVID-19 situation in Andhra Pradesh remains under control, with only sporadic cases being reported. However, as a precaution, the government is preparing dedicated COVID wards in teaching hospitals and ensuring the availability of testing kits and other medical resources.

According to official data, the state has recorded 16 COVID-19 cases so far , including 12 cases reported up to July 16 . Health authorities said they are continuously monitoring the situation and are ready to implement additional measures if required.
