Omar Abdullah declines to cut tricolour-striped ribbon at Srinagar event, folds it in respect
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday refused to cut an inaugural ribbon in saffron, white and green stripes , saying it resembled the Indian national tricolour , and instead asked organisers to remove it and keep it respectfully.
The incident occurred during the inauguration of the ‘Know Your Artisans’ programme at Kashmir Haat at the Exhibition Ground in Srinagar , an event aimed at promoting traditional crafts and supporting artisans from across the region.
As Abdullah approached the entrance to begin the ceremony, he noticed that the ribbon placed across the venue was designed in saffron, white and green colours similar to the national flag . Pausing briefly, he declined to cut the ribbon and asked officials to untie it from one side instead of proceeding with the ceremonial ribbon-cutting.
The ribbon was then removed and folded before being handed back to the organisers , with the chief minister instructing that it be kept aside with respect rather than cut .
The brief moment was captured on video by media personnel and camera crews present at the venue. The clip quickly circulated widely on social media platforms , drawing significant attention and reactions online.
Observers noted that the gesture reflected sensitivity towards the dignity associated with the national flag , which is protected under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 , governing the respectful use of national symbols.
Abdullah was accompanied during the event by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary , his advisor Nasir Aslam Wani , legislators and senior civil administration officials.
After the ribbon was removed, the chief minister proceeded with the inauguration and continued the programme , which showcases the skills and products of local artisans and aims to highlight Kashmir’s rich handicraft traditions.
