Om Birla Meets EU Delegation to Boost India-EU Strategic and Parliamentary Ties

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday met a European Parliament Delegation for Relations with India (D-IN) , led by Angelika Niebler , at the Parliament House. The discussions focused on strengthening strategic relations between India and the European Union, covering political, economic, security, technological, and cultural dimensions.

Speaker Birla expressed satisfaction over the first meeting of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for the European Union , terming it a "significant step in institutionalising legislative engagement" between India and the EU. The meeting highlighted the growing India-EU strategic partnership , with both sides reaffirming shared democratic values, common global interests, and a commitment to deepen parliamentary exchanges.

On the political front, discussions reflected collaboration on democracy, rule of law, and human rights, while economic and trade relations focused on enhancing investment, trade, sustainable development, and climate cooperation. In the security domain, both sides emphasised counter-terrorism, cyber-security, maritime safety, and broader regional and global strategic stability.

The meeting also covered science, technology, and research cooperation, including innovation, AI, space, and renewable energy projects, along with academic and student exchanges. Both parties recognised that people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges are vital to deepening mutual understanding and sustaining long-term cooperation.

The delegation’s visit and parliamentary dialogue reinforced the view that institutionalised exchanges provide a key platform for dialogue, mutual learning, and strengthening democratic institutions. The talks concluded with a shared commitment to enhance legislative engagement and cooperation across multiple sectors, further consolidating the multifaceted partnership between India and the EU.
