Old mortar shell discovered in J&K, safely neutralised by Army
An old, rusted mortar shell was discovered in a forward village in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district on Monday, prompting a swift response from security forces, officials said.
The unexploded ordnance was spotted by villagers in an open field near Sandote village in the Balakote area. Alarmed by the potential danger, locals immediately informed authorities.
A team from the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad was rushed to the spot. After securing the area and ensuring civilian safety, the experts carried out a controlled explosion , successfully neutralising the shell without any damage or injuries.
Officials said such discoveries are not uncommon in the border districts of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in areas close to the Line of Control (LoC) . These regions have witnessed frequent cross-border shelling and military engagements over the years. As a result, unexploded ordnance , including mortar shells and artillery rounds, often remains buried or concealed in fields and forests long after hostilities cease.
Seasonal changes, farming activities, or soil erosion can bring these remnants to the surface, posing serious risks to civilians. Authorities have repeatedly urged residents in border areas to avoid handling suspicious objects and to promptly report them to security forces.
The timely intervention by the Army in this instance averted a potential hazard, ensuring the safety of local residents.
