Old horror, new craze: Kanchana re-release draws crowds back to theatres

At a time when even new films are struggling to bring audiences to theatres , an unexpected success has emerged from the past. The Telugu version of the horror comedy Kanchana has returned to cinemas across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu , and the response from movie lovers has been surprisingly strong.

The film, which originally released more than a decade ago, has managed to generate impressive advance bookings on ticketing platforms. Several theatres reported healthy occupancy levels , with some shows running nearly house full , a rare sight in the current box-office phase.

Trade circles estimate that the film collected around ₹2-3 crore gross on its opening day , an impressive number for a re-release. The strong turnout once again highlights the enduring popularity of the horror-comedy franchise, particularly the much-loved Muni series among Telugu audiences.

Another reason for the film’s renewed success is the continued fan following of actor-director Raghava Lawrence. With a long gap since fans watched him on the big screen , the re-release gave many viewers a chance to relive the spooky comedy experience in theatres once again .

At a time when the box office is going through a dull phase , the film has provided some much-needed relief to theatre owners. Until major new releases arrive in the coming weeks, exhibitors remain hopeful that the nostalgia-driven re-release will continue attracting weekend crowds and keep cinema halls active.
