Many may not know, but a small bridge in Yakutpura constituency is locally called the “London Bridge.” Built over a drainage canal, it connects the ESRT Colony and Madina Nagar areas. Although small, the bridge has been a crucial part of daily life for residents in the old city for decades. Over the years, it has fallen into disrepair, making it potentially dangerous.

The retaining wall along the canal, from this bridge to the nearby railway bridge, has also been damaged, raising further safety concerns. During the rainy season, overflowing floodwaters pose risks to the surrounding neighborhoods.

Following a request from local MLA Jaffer Hussain, GHMC’s Maintenance and Projects department engineers conducted an on-site inspection. Preliminary estimates suggest that repairing the bridge will cost around Rs 2.95 crore. Detailed designs, cost estimates, and consultant appointments are being prepared to move the project forward.

MLA Jaffer Hussain has emphasized that the renovated bridge should live up to its “London Bridge” name and be visually appealing. Plans also include upgrading the approach roads on both sides to ensure smooth traffic flow. GHMC officials have stated that the project file will be sent to the Standing Committee for approval, and construction work is expected to begin immediately after the approval.
