Odisha to Host BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Meeting in Puri from June 3 to 5

Odisha will host the BRICS Technical Meeting on the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under India’s BRICS presidency from June 3 to 5 in Puri , officials said on Monday.

According to an official statement from the state Revenue and Disaster Management Department, representatives and experts from BRICS member and partner countries will participate in discussions on disaster management , climate resilience , risk reduction strategies , and international cooperation frameworks .

The meeting will bring together delegates from Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and China, among others. The event will also include technical discussions aligned with India’s broader BRICS chairship vision of “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

Officials said Odisha was selected as the host state due to its proven track record in cyclone management , community-based early warning systems , and large-scale evacuation and rescue operations , which have earned it international recognition as a model for disaster preparedness.

Reports also confirm that the meeting is being organised at a hotel facility in Puri , and will serve as a specialised platform for policymakers, technical experts, and disaster management professionals from participating countries.

The three-day conference is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange on emerging disaster management technologies , strengthen coordinated response mechanisms, and promote long-term cooperation among BRICS nations in addressing increasingly frequent climate-induced disasters.

Officials added that hosting the event in Puri will further highlight Odisha’s disaster resilience capabilities on a global stage and enhance its international visibility in the field of disaster risk governance.
