Odisha makes e-KYC mandatory for LPG supply, cracks down on black marketing
The Odisha government has made electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification compulsory for domestic consumers to avail LPG cylinders, in a move aimed at ensuring targeted delivery and curbing misuse of subsidised cooking gas.
Announcing the decision, Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister K C Patra said that LPG distributors have been directed to supply cylinders only to consumers who have completed the e-KYC process. He said the initiative is intended to eliminate irregularities in distribution and ensure that benefits reach genuine households.
The minister added that the government has intensified action against the illegal sale of small-sized LPG cylinders, which are often diverted for unauthorised commercial use. As part of the crackdown, authorities in Dhenkanal district conducted a raid and seized 27 LPG cylinders on Sunday following specific inputs about illegal storage and sale. Officials said legal proceedings would be initiated against those involved.
The state government maintained that stricter enforcement is necessary to prevent black marketing and streamline the distribution system. Officials believe the e-KYC mandate will improve transparency and accountability while reducing duplication and diversion of LPG connections. Consumers have been advised to complete their e-KYC verification with distributors to ensure uninterrupted access to cooking gas cylinders.
