Nvidia Sparks Rally as Inflation and Oil Risks Keep Investors Cautious

Global stock markets are balancing two powerful forces: optimism over artificial intelligence and caution about inflation and oil prices. The Wall Street rally showed how strongly investors are responding to technology earnings, but sentiment remains selective.

Nvidia emerged as the biggest catalyst after reporting better-than-expected profit and revenue and issuing an upbeat outlook. Its shares surged 8.7%, lifting the Nasdaq Composite 1.6% and the S&P 500 0.7%. Salesforce added to the technology boost, jumping 22.6% after reporting a strong quarter and raising its full-year revenue forecast.

The results revived confidence in AI investments, easing fears that heavy spending on chips, data centres and computing infrastructure could fail to generate sufficient returns. Nvidia’s outlook suggests demand for AI hardware remains strong, reinforcing technology stocks as a major driver of equity gains.

However, investors are not ignoring inflation. US consumer prices were running above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, keeping policy uncertainty elevated. Higher inflation could encourage the Fed to maintain restrictive interest rates, raising yields and making expensive growth stocks less attractive.

Oil prices add another complication. Crude has been volatile because of uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict and tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. A sustained rise in energy prices could push costs higher, prolong inflation and squeeze margins. Recent oil declines have eased fears of a fresh inflation shock.

These crosscurrents are producing a divided market. Technology and semiconductor shares are benefiting from AI earnings, while retailers and consumer-facing companies face concerns over stretched household budgets and persistent price pressures.

Investors are watching Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech for policy clues. A hawkish message could lift yields and dollar and pressure global equities, while signals of easier policy could support riskier assets and emerging markets.

Strong AI earnings are cushioning markets against inflation and geopolitical risks, but investors remain focused on whether AI-driven profits can stay strong enough to offset higher financing and energy costs.
