NTPC expands into Nuclear energy with 2,800 MW Rajasthan plant

NTPC Ltd., India’s largest power producer under the Ministry of Power, has announced plans to establish a 2,800 MW nuclear power plant in Banswara, Rajasthan. The project is a key step toward NTPC’s goal of achieving 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 , supporting the Government’s broader target of 100 GW nuclear generation by mid‑century.

The Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP) is being developed by Anu Shakti Vidyut Nigam Ltd. (ASHVINI), a joint venture between NTPC Ltd. and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL). It will feature four 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors , bringing a total capacity of 2,800 MW .

The project, estimated at around ₹42,000 crore , is expected to commission its first 700 MW unit by 2031 , with the remaining units becoming operational by approximately 2036 . The initiative will strengthen India’s clean energy capacity while providing reliable, base‑load electricity.

In addition, NTPC has established a wholly owned nuclear subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd. (NPUNL), incorporated in January 2025 , and has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to explore collaborations with international partners for future nuclear projects.

The Rajasthan nuclear project marks a significant step in NTPC’s strategic diversification toward low-carbon energy, reflecting India’s commitment to energy security and sustainable growth.
