NTA Reassures Students Amid NEET-UG 2026 Irregularity Probe
Amid growing concerns over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has asserted that the medical entrance test was conducted under a “full security protocol” and that it is fully cooperating with investigating agencies probing the matter.
The statement comes after the Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) launched an investigation into suspected malpractice linked to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), one of India’s largest and most competitive entrance examinations for undergraduate medical admissions.
Conducted on May 3 across thousands of centres nationwide, the examination witnessed participation from lakhs of aspirants seeking admission into MBBS and allied medical courses. In an official statement posted on X, the NTA highlighted a series of security measures implemented this year, including GPS-tracked transportation of question papers, unique watermark identifiers, biometric verification of candidates, AI-assisted CCTV surveillance and deployment of 5G jammers at examination centres.
According to the agency, the examination process was completed smoothly on the scheduled day across all centres. The NTA clarified that inputs regarding suspected malpractice surfaced only on the evening of May 7, four days after the exam, following which the information was escalated to central agencies for verification and further action.
The agency also acknowledged the role of investigating authorities, stating that recent detentions linked to the case reflected the “professional and timely work” of law enforcement agencies. NTA said it was extending full technical and examination-related support to investigators.
“The matter is presently under investigation and the facts will be established by the agencies in due course,” the agency said, adding that it would not speculate on the outcome of the inquiry.
The latest controversy has once again brought focus on the challenges surrounding large-scale competitive examinations in India. Over the years, NEET and other national-level entrance tests have faced allegations ranging from paper leaks and impersonation to organised cheating rackets, largely due to the immense pressure and high stakes associated with medical admissions.
Following controversies in recent years, authorities had strengthened security protocols for NEET-UG 2026, introducing advanced surveillance systems and stricter verification processes aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the examination.
Seeking to reassure students and parents, the NTA said the interests of genuine candidates would remain protected and that any further steps would be taken in consultation with the Ministry of Education after the investigation concludes.
