NSUI stages foot march in Dehradun over Tripura student Angel Chakma’s killing

Activists of the Indian National Students' Union (NSUI) on Saturday staged a foot march from the Dehradun Municipal Corporation to the District Magistrate’s office , where they submitted a memorandum protesting the murder of Tripura student Angel Chakma . The memorandum expressed deep concern over the law-and-order situation and the safety of students in the state, criticising the delay in action against the accused.

Earlier, on December 30, the NSUI held a candle march at Jantar Mantar, Delhi , in memory of Angel Chakma. NSUI President Varun Choudhary said, “This has now become common across the country anywhere the BJP is in power, lynching and violence have become frequent. While this murder was carried out by a few individuals, the ideology of the RSS and BJP is behind such acts. No action was taken for 15 days, and only after he passed away was there a token response. This should not be happening in the country.”

Angel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura, was attacked by a group of miscreants with knives and blunt objects in Dehradun on December 9 and later died during treatment in hospital. The complaint regarding the incident was filed 24 hours after the attack by the victim’s brother and friends.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said a preliminary investigation was conducted, during which additional sections, including attempted murder (Section 109) , were added. Five accused have been arrested, while a sixth, of Nepali origin, remains on the run, prompting a dedicated police team to trace him. Statements from the victim’s family have been recorded, and the investigation has been transferred to a senior gazetted officer for oversight.

SSP Singh added that Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been briefed on the developments, and the case is being closely monitored at the senior level and by the DGP. “All evidence and statements, including any that were previously left out, will be included in the investigation, and the outcome will be reflected in the final chargesheet,” he said.
